Atlantique
The narrowest part of Fire Island, Atlantique is difficult to access, since it has kept most of its area free from sidewalks. The deep, hot Fire Island beach sand can make for a long hike in and out of this small, quiet, family-oriented community. With only about 50 homes, Atlantique is close-knit and sheltered, with a privacy that is treasured by its residents. Despite its seclusion, Atlantique is within close range of the hustle and bustle of Fire Island’s Ocean Beach, where residents can walk to load up on supplies or enjoy the company of others. The Fire Island ferry offers service to Atlantique Town marina from the Bay Shore Fire Island ferry terminal; this is the closest ferry station to residential Atlantique.

Cherry Grove
One of the most well-known Fire Island communities, Cherry Grove is a hotbed of gay culture, flamboyance, and expressiveness. Considered by many to be the first and oldest gay community in the United States, Cherry Grove’s cultural pride is reflected in events like the Miss Fire Island contest, an immensely popular drag queen beauty pageant. Downtown Cherry Grove features a range of amenities, including several restaurants, clubs, bars, and boutiques along with more practical hardware store and convenience store. Cherry Grove is a nexus of artistic expression, seen in creative landscaping, murals, mosaics, and paintings produced by locals. In addition, Cherry Grove abounds with art galleries, elaborate theatrical productions, and amazing live entertainment that makes the entire Fire Island community shine. Cherry Grove embodies a liberal, welcoming Fire Island beach philosophy that encourages individuality; this mindset has over the years fostered a strong community bond that is palpable in the friendly smiles of community members. The liberal philosophy also shows in the carefree attitudes of residents and visitors – Cherry Grove is one Fire Island beach where nude sunbathers abound. There are around 300 houses in Cherry Grove, Fire Island, and the entire community is known for its meticulous attention to Fire Island real estate appearances, with beautifully-maintained homes, landscaping, and public walkways. Cherry Grove features many Fire Island rentals, Fire Island shares, and summer share beach houses. Visit the Fire Island Cherry Grove website for more details. (www.cherrygrove.com)       The Sayville Ferry offers service to Cherry Grove.

Corneille Estates
The compact community, located just to the west of Ocean Beach, is popular among young professionals and is definitely a singles scene. Perhaps the singles scene is why Corneille Estates was chosen as the location for One Ocean View, the ABC reality show that filmed in the Summer of 2006. In One Ocean View, eleven singles occupied a Corneille Estates summer share beach house, making reality TV history and bringing Fire Island to the attention of fans of reality TV around the world. Reality TV aside, Corneille Estates stands on its own as a beautiful community with winding boardwalks, an elementary school, a ball field, a library and lush wooded areas.  Corneille Estates residents have easy access to Ocean Beach bars, the Fire Island school facilities and a small but popular beach area. The Fire Island ferry’s closest service to Corneille Estates is in Ocean Beach, via the Bay Shore Fire Island ferry terminal.

Davis Park
A relatively new Fire Island community, Davis Park is located all the way at the Fire Island’s east end. Because of its easterly locale, Davis Park exists in isolation from the booming Ocean Beach nexus, but it possesses its own relaxed Fire Island beach culture. Davis Park actually encompasses three areas; Leja Beach, the town beach/marina, Ocean Ridge, and Davis Park, the community section. Davis Park is a true boaters’ community with huge 250-boat marina. Davis Park maintains an even balance between a young single party crowd, many of whom occupy Fire Island rentals and Fire Island shares, and family-oriented visitors and homeowners who own Fire Island real estate. The Casino is an important Davis Park hub; a combination restaurant/bar/snack bar that is extremely popular with visitors and locals. The Fire Island Ferry offers service to Davis Park from the Patchogue Fire Island Ferry terminal.

Dunewood
Dunewood is a family-oriented community with about 100 homes. Hardly the place for a summer share beach house or other Fire Island Shares, Dunewood banned group Fire Island rentals to maintain its residential-only atmosphere. Dunewood is a serene, private community; this privacy is preserved by Dunewood’s conspicuous lack of restaurants, bars, or stores. Dunewood is known for its Yacht Club, which offers sailing lessons and sponsors a well-known sailing regatta. With a strong homeowners association, Dunewood has bloomed into a beautifully-maintained, sublime retreat for Fire Island visitors who prefer privacy over parties. Far from being a remote location on the Fire Island map, Dunewood’s close proximity to Fair Harbor makes up for its lack of facilities. It is a great place to get away while remaining in walking distance of other Fire Island beach communities’ civilization and amenities.  The Fire Island Ferry offers service to Dunewood from the Bay Shore Fire Island Ferry terminal.

Fair Harbor
Fair Harbor is a 400-home community that is a mix of swinging singles and vacationing families. Known as a refuge from the urban grind, Fair Harbor is a sanctuary for New York City inhabitants who find solace in its relaxed, casual atmosphere. Fair Harbor features a well-stocked “downtown” district with a liquor store, upscale food market, post office, and The Dock, an acclaimed restaurant and bar with spectacular bay views. Fair Harbor offers lifeguard-monitored swimming on both the bay side and ocean side. Its Annual Arts and Crafts Fair is a Fire Island favorite, well-attended by other Fire Island communities.

Fire Island Lighthouse
The Fire Island Light House is Fire Island's most historically significant landmark. Originally built in 1857, the Fire Island light house is now rebuilt and open to the public as a museum and observatory. Sayville Ferry runs historical trips to the lighthouse on a group charter basis.

Fire Island Pines
The Fire Island Pines is Fire Island’s largest town; a 700-home community with a strong gay culture that resonates with its close neighboring community, Cherry Grove. Fire Island Pines community is largely defined by Fire Island Shares and summer share beach houses, as groups of friends come together to revel. The Fire Island Pines features sprawling, winding boardwalks and some of the areas most upscale Fire Island real estate. Sounds of construction fill the community in the early season, as homeowners renovate, update, and expand their Fire Island Pines homes. The sizzling summer Fire Island Pines culture makes it a popular choice among visitors seeking Fire Island rentals, Fire Island shares, and all varieties of summer beach house shares. Charitable fundraisers and gay culture events fill the Fire Island Pines social calendar, with the annual Invasion of the Pines being perhaps the most notable. For the Invasion of Fire Island Pines, scores of glamorous drag queens commandeer a ferry and descend upon the Fire Island Pines for a day of fabulous hedonism. The Fire Island Pines is well-equipped with a grocery store, two liquor stores, boutiques, restaurants and bars. Its scenic harbor holds 85 boats. The Sayville Ferry offers service to Fire Island Pines from the Sayville Long Island, Ferry terminal.

Fire Island Summer Club
One of Fire Island’s most prestigious communities, the Fire Island Summer Club is extremely exclusive, affluent, and private. The Fire Island Summer club has few facilities, and only spans a 750-foot stretch of land from the bay side to the ocean. Residents enjoy their privacy, and stroll down to nearby ocean beaches for dining and nightlife. Guests should respect the clubs resident enforced laws. If you stray on to the beach make sure you leave your dog, Frisbee, beer, and attitude behind. If you are coming to Fire Island by private boat avoid anchoring it off shore of the summer club, unless you are invited. This is a serious restriction and they have been enforcing it! The Fire Island Summer Club is probably the last place you’d want to look for a Fire Island rental or Fire Island shares – it’s way too exclusive for that.

Kismet
Kismet is Fire Island’s westernmost party hub; a largely swinging single Fire Island beach community boasting a vibrant nightlife of never-ending happy hours, disco dancing, and boisterous house parties. A popular Fire Island summer share beach house destination, Kismet is also populated by residents who share their community in harmony with Fire Island rental tenants. Kismet is one of the few Fire Island communities accessible by car, in a roundabout way – Robert Moses Beach is a 15-minute walk away. Kismet features two bayside restaurants, the Inn and The Out, along with a liquor store, food market, and pizzeria. Kismet has a beautiful 100-slip commercial marina that is usually packed with boaters. Besides the quaint country-like atmosphere, this laid-back town offers a refuge from the seemingly over-populated beaches and towns to its east. The Fire Island Ferry offers service to Kismet Park from the Bay Shore Fire Island Ferry terminal.

Lonelyville
One of the first communities to be established on Fire Island, Lonelyville has no stores, bars or crowds. Its secluded privacy attracts those who wish to get away from it all. Lonelyville’s Fire Island real estate includes a mix of modest beach cottages, largely concentrated at its east end; and more modern homes that were built on the west end. Lonelyville’s inhabitants enjoy the best of both worlds; choosing between the quiet solace of their homes and the nightlife and amenities offered by neighboring communities, which are only a short Fire Island beach walk away.

Ocean Bay Park
Ocean Bay Park is perhaps most well-known for Flynn's Fire Island bar, a serious drinking and all-night dancing establishment. Flynn’s Fire Island bar captures the party atmosphere of this small town, which is populated by many summer beach house share and Fire Island shares tenants. The rambunctious nature of the Fire Island share party lifestyle has been a point of contention with residents who prefer a more peaceful atmosphere; as a result, there has been a slight decline in summer share beach house rentals as owner-occupancy rises. Ocean Bay Park has a modest commercial stretch along the Bay Walk, which features a Fire Island hotel, four restaurants, bars, and a food market. Ocean Bay Park has one of Fire Island’s only bicycle shops, which offers bicycle rentals for exploring and cruising through its network of sidewalks. Ocean Bay Park’s laid-back, non-restrictive lifestyle is especially appreciated by the waves of young renters who seek a carefree, fun environment as the ideal Fire Island beach experience. The Fire Island Ferry offers service to Ocean Bay Park from the Bay Shore Fire Island Ferry terminal.

Ocean Beach
The unofficial “capital” of Fire Island, Ocean Beach is a 600-home community with the greatest concentration of bars, restaurants and stores on the entire island. Ocean Beach’s bay side main street is a sight to behold, a unique nexus unlike any other town on Fire Island. Ocean Beach’s Main Street walks are lined with eight restaurants and bars, food markets, boutiques, a fresh fish market, arts and crafts stores, a spa, a hardware store, a sports store, ice cream shops, real estate offices, and more. Ocean Beach also offers more Fire Island hotels than any other community. It is here, along Main Street, that Ocean Beach developed its reputation as the “Land of ‘No’” – regulations instituted to maintain safety and impose control over the influx of tourists reached levels of absurdity, most famously noted by a regulation against eating ice cream on Main Street. Recently the regulations have relaxed somewhat, but Ocean Beach is still a tightly-run ship, as well as being home to Fire Island’s only police station. Away from the hustle and bustle of Main Street, Ocean Beach preserves the peaceful Fire Island NY beach community atmosphere, with many family-occupied houses to balance out the Ocean Beach bar-hopping transients. Ocean Beach was elevated to national prominence in the summer of 2006, when the ABC reality show, One Ocean View, began filming. For one month, reality TV invaded peaceful Ocean Beach walkways, as the summer share beach house boys and girls of reality TV experienced the magic of Ocean Beach through the lens of a reality TV camera. Once ABC Television Network completed filming, the One Ocean View reality TV cameras disappeared, restoring Ocean Beach to its normal mix of visiting partiers and resident relaxation-seekers.  Wherever you stay in Fire Island, NY, Ocean Beach is a must-visit location on the Fire Island map – even if only for the day. The Fire Island Ferry offers service to Ocean Beach from the Bay Shore Fire Island Ferry terminal.

Point o' Woods
As Fire Island’s oldest community, Point o' Woods is completely self-contained – with a store, kids’ camps, a ferry line, tennis courts, fields, and Fire Island’s only train track. Point O’ Woods’ insular nature is exemplified by its massive fence that borders Ocean Bay Park to the west. Flynn’s Fire Island bar is visible through the fence, but you’ll need a key to get through – at 15 feet high, the fence is an imposing barricade, and attempting to scale it is certainly not advisable (though it may seem possible to someone who’s downed several cocktails at Flynn’s Fire Island bar). Point O’ Woods residents, many of whom are vacationing from New York city, treasure their private community, and do their best to discourage visitors from passing through. Visitors who gain access from the Fire Island beach and defy residents by exploring Point o’ Woods freely are taken by its beauty; this private community, perhaps more than any other Fire Island community, has the look and feel of a bygone era. Walkways meander through wooded terrain, and old houses with ancient bicycles parked outside are laid out in a manner that appears haphazard when compared to the well-organized residential grids of Ocean Bay Park and Ocean Beach. This private community has a strong emphasis on family living, and offers no nightlife, bars, or restaurants. The Fire Island Ferry offers service to Point O’ Woods from the Bay Shore Fire Island Ferry terminal.

Robert Moses State Park
Attached to the mainland by the Robert Moses Causeway. Offers incredible surf fishing, public parks, and facilities. With the correct permit and vehicle you can drive on the beach.

Robins Rest
Nestled in the midst of Federal Seashore wilderness, Robbins Rest is a serene, peaceful Fire Island beach community with approximately 40 residential houses; a mix of classic Fire Island cottages and more modern, sleek architectural designs. Robbins Rest is home to Tequila Jacks, an extremely popular bay front restaurant and hotel, but aside from that, it has no other stores or restaurants. For a community with only one commercial location, Robbins Rest is lucky to have Tequila Jacks, which is known for its outstanding food, live music, and free docking. Robbins Rest residents treasure its privacy, but also enjoy the fact that Ocean Beach and all its amenities are located just to the west. Robbins Rest features a beautiful marina, but no ferry service – residents and visitors ride the Fire Island ferry out of Bay Shore to Ocean Beach and take a short walk to get there.

Sailors Haven
Maintained by the National Seashore, Sailors Haven is a Fire Island day-tripper destination with no residential living. With access to Sunken Forest, this boaters’ community is known for its public beach, picnic areas and snack bar – try the ice cream! Sayville Ferry is the ferry concessionaire to the National Seashore providing a regular ferry schedule to Sailors Haven/Sunken Forest.

Saltaire
Saltaire is an ideal Fire Island community for families seeking a peaceful vacation. The well-maintained, manicured village is a celebration of recreation, with acclaimed youth programs, sports fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, and a Yacht Club featuring regattas and sailing instruction. Saltaire residents wish to keep their community quiet and private; as a result, their commercial locations are limited by zoning, but still include a liquor store and food market. A library, post office, and town hall add to Saltaire’s snug, family-oriented community atmosphere. Saltaire’s unique terra includes lush, wooded areas; pristine Fire Island beaches; and many open spaces, giving it a soothing, natural feel. Saltaire’s culture includes an annual bluegrass festival and annual arts and crafts fair, but for the most part, this is a quiet, exclusive, family oriented community. Saltaire is the 2nd largest Fire Island community and it is situated on the widest area on the Fire Island map. Fire Island Ferry service to Saltaire leaves from the Bay Shore Fire Island ferry terminal.

Seaview
This beautiful community boasts what is perhaps the most ideal location on the Fire Island map, snugly wedged between Ocean Bay Park and Ocean Beach. With a strong emphasis on residential living, Seaview maintains a peaceful village feel and features a mix of sleek modern architecture and old-school Fire Island cottages. Seaview has a liquor store, food store, and ice cream shop, but thanks to its location, has easy access to the drinking, dining, and shopping choices of neighboring Fire Island communities. Seaview is largely self-contained, with a private boat marina, playground, tennis courts, basketball courts, fields, and fantastic lifeguard-protected Fire Island beach. Seaview is home to Fire Island’s only Synagogue, which also runs a youth program and holds many Fire Island community activities. Seaview is an excellent community to tour on foot or by bicycle, with impressive, large plots of Fire Island real estate featuring beautiful landscaping and majestic architecture. Fire Island ferry service to Seaview leaves from the Bay Shore Fire Island ferry terminal.

Smith Point
The most easterly point of Fire Island, Smith Point is attached to the mainland by the Smith Point Bridge and William Floyd Parkway. Smith Point offers wide beaches and high sand dunes, as well as Fire Island’s only surfing competition.

Sunken Forest
A natural wonder and beautiful canopy of tangled flora, Fire Island’s Sunken Forest is completely unique; protected and run by the National Seashore. A leisurely stroll through Sunken Forest is a fantastic way to spend the day out of the sun, and features some of Fire Island’s best bird watching and wildlife.

Watch Hill
Run by the Fire Island National Seashore this beautiful segment of the island offers camping, back country trails, nature tours, restaurant, a small shop, large public boat marina, and camp ground.

Water Island
Water Island is a small, extremely private Fire Island beach community of about 50 houses on modest plots of Fire Island real estate. With Davis Park to the East and Barrett Beach to the west, Water Island is afforded a generous space cushion from Fire Island beach civilization – giving it a secluded privacy that is well-appreciated by its residents. There is ferry service to this small community. Sayville Ferry is that ferry service,  providing a regular ferry schedule.
